NBCC: Breast Cancer Caucus

The Issues

  1. Guaranteed Access to Quality Health Care for All

NBCC knows that we will not achieve our mission of eradicating breast cancer until all women, men, and children have guaranteed access to quality health care, regardless of their ability to pay. We asked the candidates to tell us what they would do to ensure everyone gets the health care they need..

  2. Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program

In response to NBCC's campaign for increased federal funding, this competitive, peer-reviewed research Program at the Department of Defense was launched in 1992. This Program funds innovative grants within a structure that brings scientists and consumers together in making policy decisions. It has served as a model for other research programs, and has funded the initial research that led to key breakthroughs in breast cancer treatment. We asked the candidates to tell us what they would do to ensure that this successful Program continues to receive adequate funding.

  3. Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Act

The Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Act (S. 579/HR 1157) will establish a national strategy to study the role that the environment plays in the development of breast cancer, through a grant program at the National Institutes of Health. We cannot find the cure until we find the cause. Despite years of efforts, we still don't know what causes breast cancer and we need a plan of action. This bill sets up that plan. We asked the candidates whether they will support and help pass this critical piece of legislation.

  4. Preservation of the Medicaid Breast and Cervical Cancer Treatment Program

In 2000, after years of NBCC grassroots lobbying, Congress enacted the Breast and Cervical Cancer Treatment Program. This Program gives states the option of providing Medicaid coverage to low-income, uninsured women who are diagnosed with breast and/or cervical cancer through a federal screening program. We want to ensure this program is preserved by the next Administration so we asked the candidates to tell us what they would do to make sure it continues.

The road to the 2008 election has begun and soon we will have new leadership in office. The time is now to tell the candidates that breast cancer issues don't just matter to us but that we vote on these issues.

This year alone more than 240,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and nearly 40,000 women will die from this disease. Women have a one in eight lifetime risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer. We still do not know what causes breast cancer, how to prevent it, or how to treat it effectively. We intend to change this and we will – with your help.
